Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing (SCRP) is the treatment for periodontitis (gum disease).  The main cause of periodontitis is a buildup of plaque. Over time, plaque buildup becomes tartar (calculus).

Our immune system tries to get rid of the tartar. Unfortunately, the process destroys bone and ligaments around the teeth. This forms pockets (spaces between teeth and gums) around the teeth that harbor bacteria, more plaque and tartar and thus more irritation.  This leads to further bone loss and the cycle continues. That's where we come in! SCRP is a gum infection therapy (most people call it a "deep cleaning") to remove the plaque and tartar and flush out any bacteria.  Best not to get to the point of bone loss though. Scheduling regular exam and cleanings can prevent this or at least give us the ability to catch periodontitis in the earlier stages. So go ahead and click that button below...you know you want to.
